Mercy Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency

CPS sponsors a PGY-1 residency at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in downtown Chicago. Residents will gain experience providing a wide range of pharmacotherapy, educational, and medication management services to patients, providers, and staff in a community medical center setting.

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center

Mercy Hospital, Chicago's first chartered hospital, has been serving the city for 150 years. Located just south of Chicago's Loop, Mercy is a 250-bed community teaching hospital with a rich history of providing both high quality medical care and excellence in medical education. It offers a complete range of inpatient and outpatient services, and is home to a large number of medical residents.

The pharmacy department offers a broad scope of services, and consists of over 40 pharmacists and technicians. Clinical services provided include a pharmacokinetic dosing program, inpatient and outpatient warfarin dosing, and active roles on a number of inpatient and outpatient services and clinics.

Pharmacy students from a variety of colleges of pharmacy train at Mercy.

About the Program

The CPS/MHMC residency is a structured, post-graduate experiential training program that strives to develop proficient and professionally committed practitioners. It is focused on improving the resident's abilities beyond entry level competence in clinical and operational pharmacy services, and on developing leadership skills that can be applied in any practice setting.

In this program, the resident will actively participate in efforts to improve the scope and quality of pharmacy services, and will evaluate the relevant outcomes of such initiatives.

As a clinician, the resident will demonstrate proficiency and responsibility in caring for patients with a wide variety of disease states in different health care settings.

As befits the teaching missions of the sponsoring organizations, the resident will become skilled as an educator of health professionals, students, and the public. Throughout all experiences, the resident will acquire the skills necessary for lifelong learning and self-assessment.
